BRUNSWICK - The sixth annual Southeast Georgia Health System Bridge Run across the Sidney Lanier Bridge is scheduled for Feb. 16.
In its first five years the race was a single, 5K run. Now, in addition to the run across Georgia's highest bridge, considered the toughest race in the entire state, there will also be a 5K family walk. Other activities added this year are:
The Sidney Lanier Open Boat Regatta
DNR interactive fishing
Children's casting contest
Entertainment by DJ Dance Jammers
Food and awards
U.S. Coast Guard lifesaving demonstration
According to Spud Woodward with the Coastal Resources Office of the Georgia DNR, both the children's casting contest and the interactive fishing simulator will give participants, "the chance to practice casting on dry land."
The children's contest is open to all children from those old enough to cast to age 15.
"They don't have to bring anything. We'll provide the rods and reels and will help them learn to cast accurately," Woodward said.
The regatta, which is also in its first year, requires no registration, says organizer Jason Chervenak.
"Anyone with a boat is invited to join us and participate."
Participants will meet in the Brunswick River under the Sidney Lanier Bridge shortly before the race/walk's start at 9 a.m.
Registration is required to participate in the walk/run and proceeds will benefit local charities.  The entry fee to pre-register is $18 before Feb. 4. The fee to pre-register from Feb. 5-15 is $20, while the fee the day of the race/walk is $25. Race day registration begins at 7:30 a.m. at the southern base of the bridge. Only participants who pre-register will be guaranteed a T-shirt. Because of the steep grade of the bridge, no baby strollers, running strollers or roller blades will be allowed. To register, go to www.active.com or www.sghs.org. You can also get entry forms by calling (912) 261-0874. Trophies will be awarded in 15 different categories. Results will be posted following the event at www.goldenislestrackclub.com.
