The premiere of the documentary film “Dorchester Academy: A Legacy of Liberty” will take place on Sunday, January 18, beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the Liberty County Performing Arts Center.
Written, produced, directed and edited by award-winning filmmaker and broadcast journalist Kay Flowers Johnson, the documentary chronicles the extraordinary history and national significance of Dorchester Academy in Midway — a pivotal training ground for leaders of the American Civil Rights Movement. Through archival footage, expert historical insight, and personal reflections, the film illuminates the power of place and the enduring legacy of those who gathered at Dorchester to organize, learn, and lead.
The film is executive produced by Brynn Grant, whose efforts to elevate Dorchester Academy’s story grew from a deep commitment to historic preservation, community storytelling, and public education. The project was made possible in large part through the generous leadership support of Katherine Stringer and Travis Stringer, the film’s largest benefactors, whose investment helped ensure the story of Dorchester Academy would be shared with broader audiences.
The production team wishes to express its deep respect and heartfelt gratitude to the many individuals, families, historians, community leaders, and supporters who contributed in countless ways to the creation of this film, as well as to the generations of stewards who have preserved and protected the extraordinary place that is Dorchester Academy. Special thanks are extended to the Dorchester Improvement Association for its enduring leadership and unwavering commitment to safeguarding Dorchester Academy’s legacy. Special thanks are extended to the Liberty County Historical Society for acting as fiduciary for this project.
The film screening will be followed by a facilitated discussion, offering attendees an opportunity to engage more personally with the themes and historical impact presented in the documentary.
Following the screening, guests are invited to travel to the historic Dorchester Academy campus in Midway for a 3 p.m. reception and guided tour, providing an opportunity to experience firsthand the place where civil rights leaders once trained and organized.
Dorchester Academy is a National Historic Landmark and a designated site on the National Civil Rights Trail, placing Liberty County alongside Atlanta and Albany as one of only three Georgia communities recognized for their pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement.
The premiere event is designed to honor Dorchester Academy’s past while inspiring continued stewardship and public understanding of its national importance.
