Pvt. Daniel Brazelton, 3-15th Infantry Battalion, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, fled from custody Friday as he was being taken from Fort Stewart to Liberty County Jail, post officials reported Friday evening.
Soldiers from the unit were driving Brazelton in a van when they stopped in traffic on Airport Road in Hinesville. Brazelton jumped from the van and ran towards a nearby woodline, a news release from Lt. Col. Jeffrey Allen said.
The soldiers ran after Brazelton, but couldn't catch him.
Soldiers from the Army's Criminal Investigative Division were called to assist and are cooperating with local authorities to find Brazelton.
The information from Fort Stewart did not say why Brazelton was being held. An e-mail asking for more information early Saturday had not been answered.
Any information on Brazelton's whereabouts can be sent to the Liberty County Sheriff's Department at 368-3911 or the Fort Stewart Emergency Services central dispatch at 767-2824.
