Fort Stewart Forestry Branch is burning nearly 600 acres of underbrush today and smoke should be visible from the cantonment area and Hinesville.

A news release from the post said 579 acres, which are about three miles west of the cantonment area and four miles southwest of the Lawson fire tower will be burned. Flames are not expected to be visible from Highways 144 or 119. Winds are predicted to be out of the northeast at 7-8 mph.

However, the release said, the area is thickly vegetated and is expected to generate a lot of smoke. The smoke will be visible from the main post area.
