An arson investigator is expected to arrive Wednesday to check into the cause of a Midway fire that began around 2 a.m. Monday and destroyed a home in the 900 block of Baconton Road.
Midway Fire Chief Terrell Chipp said the homeowner, Joquina Fleming, who is a nurse at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, was not home at the time.
Midway Assistant Fire Chief Joe Feinhals said the fire may have started in the living room, and when firefighters arrived the home was fully engulfed in flames, which shot several feet into the air.
Fire and rescue units from Midway, Lake George, Riceboro and the Eastern District worked to bring the blaze under control in less than an hour. However, according to Feinhals, the fire had been burning for awhile before crews received a call from the neighbor who spotted and reported it.
