Law enforcement authorities have determined the cause of death of a Long County woman was suicide.
According to the Long County Sheriff’s Department, Lyn Howard, 46, of Ludowici died Jan. 20 from a single gunshot wound to the chest. Her husband, Roy, reportedly told authorities he returned home and found his wife lying in the carport of their home.
Howard told authorities he went to his wife and held her hand, but it was cold. He then saw a pistol by her side and called his parents. At 2:17 p.m., a sheriff’s dispatcher took a call reporting the death.
According to sheriff’s Det. Ty Smith, a pistol found at the scene had one expended cartridge and a single casing was found.
Smith contacted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Agents William Jennings and Mechel Washington responded.
Ludowici Police Department also responded, but according to Assistant Chief Richard Robertson, the case was turned over to the sheriff’s department as the primary investigators.
Howard was well known around Hinesville as a secretary in the law office of Mayor Tom Ratcliffe. Besides her husband, survivors include two children.
