A fire destroyed a doublewide mobile home in Gum Branch early Wednesday, leaving a family of six homeless.

According to Gum Branch Fire Chief Thomas Fisher, the fire began sometime about 4 a.m.

Gregory and Sheila Wells and their children, who are 3, 5, 8 and 13 years old, escaped injury. They are now staying with other family  and receiving help from the Red Cross.

Gum Branch Fire Department asked for mutual aid from Hinesville, Walthourville and Long County departments.

Liberty County Fire Coordinator James Ashdown said the cause is under investigation. Preliminarily it looks like an electrical overload, he said.
