One man was killed Friday night and two others injured in a head-on collision on Highway 196 East in Liberty County, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
Sean Bennett, 23, of Hinesville was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Senior Trooper Michael Reddish.
He said the accident occurred just before 10 p.m., when a Mercury Mountaineer, driven by Tommy Moore, 38, of Rincon, was going west in the eastbound lane. It collided with a 1980 Cadillac driven by Bennett's brother, Rodney Sanks, 32, also of Hinesville.
The highway, commonly called the Fleming Shortcut, is under construction. But the trooper implied that did not factor into the wreck.
Reddish said Bennett was seen crossing into the oncoming lane several times by witnesses who called Liberty County 911. Eventually the Mountaineer continued traveling in the eastbound lane until the crash about a mile east of Fleming Loop Road.
Sanks was flown to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah by LifeStar helicopter. Moore was taken by ambulance to the same hospital.
Moore, according to Reddish, is being charged with homicide by vehicle in the first degree, driving on the wrong side of the road, and possession of a controlled substance.
Reddish said the brothers were going to work at an area Wal-Mart when the accident occurred. Reddish said the brothers' family was notified at the scene as they made their way to the hospital, having been called by witnesses.
"I notified their father his son was killed in the accident," Reddish said. "It's one of the hardest things I have to do and something I never get used to, to inform a parent their child is dead."
Moore, who was complaining of stomach pain, was still in Memorial Saturday. His condition is unknown. According to Reddish he will be arrested and housed at the Liberty County Regional Jail in Hinesville when he is released from the hospital. Sanks condition was not available.
