An 11-year-old girl’s drowning Sunday was an accident, according to Long County Sheriff’s Department Detective Nicky Anderson.
The victim, Anjalia Drake of the Country Manor mobile-home park, was identified by Sheriff Craig Nobles on Monday.
He said she was swimming with friends and apparently got into trouble in deep water in a borrow pit adjacent to the park.
Long County deputies responded shortly before 5 p.m. to a report of a drowning.
Nobles said her body was recovered from the pond shortly after 6 by members of a Fort Stewart dive team.
Anderson said one of the girl’s companions tried to help her before seeking help.
Deputy Coroner Robert Parker said the GBI crime lab was to perform an autopsy Monday. Anderson reported that the autopsy determined the death to be accidental.
