This area's U.S. representative, Jack Kingston (R-Savannah), had a gift for local firefighters and emergency service agencies during a stop in Midway Thursday.
The congressman presented American flags that flew at the Capitol in Washington, to members of the Midway Volunteer Fire Department, Riceboro Volunteer Fire Department, Lake George Fire Rescue, Eastern District Fire Rescue, Liberty County Emergency Management Agency and Liberty County Fire Services.
The honors were bestowed upon the departments as a sign of appreciation for their help in fighting wildfires that blazed around Waycross last spring.
The local heroes were just a few of the 3,300 firefighters from across Georgia and 44 other states, along with 220 state prisoners, who worked 12-hour days to control what was the largest wildfire in the state's recorded history.
"I don't know that people around this part of Georgia realize what a huge effort you made and what a big difference it made," Kingston said. "I just wanted to make sure that on behalf of the United States Congress, I said thank you."
