The June 28 midnight patrol was the last for Hinesville police Lt. Thomas Ovitt, midnight shift watch commander.
The shift marked the end of his 32 years with the HPD. Some retired officers attended the roll call to send him off.
They noted that Ovitt has never drawn a paycheck from anywhere other than police. He started out of high school as a radio dispatcher, then a jail officer before starting patrol.
Ovitt said he will start his retirement with a 30-day vacation to his family home in Vermont then back to Hinesville to think about a second career.
