A man is in critical condition after the small plane he was flying crashed in Wayne County on Friday afternoon, according to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff John G. Carter said that around 1:21 p.m., a single-engine one seater airplane crashed at the Wayne County Airport in a grassy area several feet from the runway.

The pilot, who has been identified as Paul Laurent of Wisconsin, was airlifted to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, where he was listed in critical condition.

The National Transportation Safety Board was expected to arrive Saturday to investigate the crash. The Sheriff’s Office is providing security at the scene until NSTB arrives.
