A Guyton man was shot and wounded Friday night in Midway.

According to Liberty County Sheriff’s Office Detective Julie Hibbeler, Roger Young was visiting a female friend at a home she shared with a former boyfriend in the 400 block of Dogwood Lane in the Woodland Lakes Subdivision off Limerick Road.

Around 11:30 p.m, Scott Simmons, 29, arrived and found Young in the front yard in the residence. Simmons demanded Young leave the residence, which Young did. As Young was approaching Richmond Hill, he called the woman to check on her welfare, and she told him she was afraid to remain in the residence with Simmons and asked him to come back and get her.

When Young was waiting on the porch for the woman, according to Hibbeler, Simmons allegedly struck Young on the head with an ax handle.
The glass door between the two men closed, and as Young held onto the door, Simmons allegedly shot at Young through the door, striking him in the left thigh.

Young was airlifted to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, where he is expected to recover.

Hibbeler said Simmons was charged with aggravated assault and cruelty to children because the incident took place in the presence of a 9-year-old.
