Hinesville police have confirmed a teenager was shot at a home in the Eagles Landing subdivision Friday night.

The shooting occurred at a house on the 1400 block of Abrahms Ally shortly before 7 p.m. The teen was rushed to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah with a gunshot wound to the right side of his abdomen.

A neighbor who declined to give her name said she was preparing dinner when she heard what sounded to her like a firework and saw several people run from the residence.

According to Hinesville Police Det. Susie Jackson, there were between four and seven people in the home at the time of the shooting. Jackson said Kevin Peters, 18, was horsing around with a 17-year-old who had a handgun. Jackson said that, according to witnesses at the home, the gun went off accidently, shooting Peters in the abdomen. The 17-year-old brought the gun to the house, but police aren't sure where he got it. A 17-year-old cousin, who was in the home at the time and witnessed the shooting, called police to report the incident.

Jackson said officers went to the alleged shooter's home on Latham Court in the Hawthorne subdivision and tried to question the teen, however, he ran away and eluded police.

The shooter has not been questioned. Jackson said he is wanted only for questioning at this time. Anyone with information should call the HPD at 876-8215 or 368-8211.

Peters underwent surgery at Memorial Health, but his condition was unknown at press time.
