Much of Long County lost power Saturday, and several homes reported damage from what is believed to have been a tornado.

“The National Weather Service said that they couldn’t confirm a tornado striking down," Ludowici/Long County Fire Chief Richard Truman said. "But from several reports we believe one hit, the weather service is sending someone out to look at the damage to see if it was a tornado."

Truman said his department received the first of several calls reporting electrical power lines down from high winds about 7 p.m. He said firefighters responded to areas near Forestry and Macon Darien roads. When they arrived, more reports were received for Old Barrington Road. 

Truman said the firefighters discovered several trees uprooted and sheet metal strewn about. He said county EMA Director Bob Hefley was called, and he then called the National Weather Service.

“Two residents, who were in the area where some trees were uprooted and severe damage was done, said that it sounded like a freight train hitting,” Truman said.

The chief said several residents reported shingles and skirting missing from their homes, and that two homes had significant damage. He said the power outages were in the northern part of the county and lasted until 1 a.m.

He said no injuries were reported.

“Our guys did a good job, and the guys from Canoochee EMS did a good job getting the power back up, I’m just very thankful that no one was hurt”, said Truman.
