Patrons enjoying lunch at El Potro Mexican Restaurant in Hinesville Thursday had a front-row seat as an 18-wheeler dove into a ditch in front of the popular eatery.
According to Hinesville Police Department Traffic Accident Investigator Lt. Max McLendon, the driver was heading west on Highway 84 "hauling about 40,000 pounds of copper" when, for a reason still to be determined, "he drifted off the road to his right and went into the ditch."
"Once in the ditch," the investigator said, "there was a hazardous spill, which caused the (Environmental Protection Agency) to be involved to clean up the hazardous material."
Members of the HPD and the Hinesville Fire Department responded to the scene.
McClendon said the accident is still under investigation. No injuries were reported and a damage estimate was not available.
