A vehicle recovered Tuesday afternoon from the Altamaha River was a pickup truck that had been reported stolen in 2005, Long County Sheriff Craig Nobles said.

The search was prompted by the report of a missing Jesup man. The Jesup Police Department said Tuesday that Dhirubhai Patel, 57, was last seen Monday driving a black 2003 Honda Civic with Georgia license plate No. AMU4250.

Wayne County Sheriff John Carter said deputies were searching Johnston Landing for any sign of his vehicle. Using sonar in the dark waters, they did find a vehicle, which turned out not to be Patel’s car.

The landing was shut down for much of Tuesday afternoon. The site, on the Long County side of the river off Highway 84, is a popular boat ramp and fishing area.
