A construction worker helping build the new middle school in South Bryan fell to his death on Thursday morning.
The worker, who has not yet been identified, fell 18 feet and hit his head on a concrete floor around 8:30 a.m. Thursday. He was dead when responders arrived at the scene, according to Detective Mickey Sands with the Bryan County Sherriff Department.
Before the fall, the construction worker, who Sands described as a 38-year-old Hispanic man, was standing on a concrete wall. Sands said the man was setting trusses on top of the wall that is going to be part of the roof of the new middle school at 503 Warren Hill Road, near Belfast Keller Road in South Bryan.
The worker was standing with a metal truss between his legs. The boom of a crane moved and a cable pulled the truss, which caught the man under his left thigh.
He was flipped off the wall and landed “head first onto the concrete” floor, Sands said. 
“It was real bad,” he said. “[He was] just a hard working guy.”
The incident is being treated as an accident and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating, Sands said.
John Oliver, the superintendant of Bryan County Schools, said he was told about the incident around 9 a.m. Thursday.
“It’s truly a sad situation for the worker and his family,” he said.
