Deacon Joe Louis Scott of Hinesville was honored August 28 at Okatie Village in Okatie, South Carolina for receiving three Purple Hearts during his lifetime.

In recognition of those who have displayed extraordinary valor in service to the nation, the military awards the Purple Heart medal. This honor is bestowed upon service members who have been wounded or killed as a result of enemy action. Since its institution by General George Washington in 1782 and its revival in 1932, the Purple Heart stands as one of the oldest and most respected military awards.

At his current age of 89, Deacon Scott is still enjoying life with his wife of 46 years, Deaconess Gracie Scott, who is also 89. They are members of the First Calvary Missionary Baptist of Hinesville, where Reverend S.L. Thorne is the pastor.

Surrounded by his wife, son, grandson, other veterans, local and out of state family and friends, in addition, to his church family, Scott enjoyed a luncheon provided by Sprenger Health Care of Bluffton.
