Scout Reis Hill presented the Winn Army Community Hospital emergency room on Fort Stewart with 100 handmade bears for children who receive treatment at the hospital.
Hill, who is working on becoming an Eagle Scout, presented the bears Tuesday morning to the ER department in hopes of proving some comfort to the children who receive treatment there.
“It makes kids comfortable, knowing they have something there,” said Hill, a member of Troop 500. “I wanted to be able to provide that to others.”
The idea stemmed from a hospital stay Hill’s younger brother had when he was about 5 years old. She found a stuffed Snoopy and gave it to him.
“It helped him,” she said. “He never let go of it. To this day, he still has it.”
It gave her the idea that kids needed something.
Hill, a Scout for seven years, delivered a bear to young Eric Bermudez, whose mom April Arciva was glad for her son to receive it.
“It’s comforting to know that people still care,” she said.
Melissa Hungerford, clinical nurse supervisor at Winn’s department of emergency medicine, says the bears will be appreciated — and likely will go quickly.
“I think it’s going to make quite an impact on some of our children who come in,” she said. “They’re here for an emergency and this little bit of comfort will be special to them. It means a lot.”
Hill staged “sew parties” to put together the bears, recycling upscale dress shirts for some of the material.
“We had about 20 volunteers who helped me with this project,” she said. “It made me really happy, because I put all this work into this project. Seeing the reactions, that somebody cares about them, meant a lot to me. I hope this catches on and people take time to donate to the hospitals for people in need.”
