Liberty County Sheriff J. Don Martin is recuperating slowly  after a vehicle accident on Dec. 3 sent him to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah with six cracked ribs, a fractured wrist and a broken leg.
A Dec. 10 surgery on his injured leg was successful, and Martin’s ventilator and trachea tube were removed around Christmas. He is still in intermediate care.
On Tuesday, the sheriff’s wife, Polly Martin, updated his page on the Caringbridge.org Web site, describing his current phase of recovery as slow.
The site allows her to report updates on the sheriff’s condition. Guest may also post get-well notes on the page.
According to Martin’s wife, the sheriff had his first solid meal of grits and ice cream on Christmas morning. Although he still seems a bit confused, she said he is “awakening” and “steadily improving.”
Polly Martin said Don Martin’s caregivers have stressed the importance of rest and nursing care, so she has asked well-wishers to limit phone calls so he can sleep. “Though many of you are calling to see if you can visit, and while your intentions are good, just know that it may not be the best thing for Don right now,” Polly Martin said.
