Liberty County Sheriff Steve Sikes confirmed to the Courier that one person is dead, and another wounded following a shooting shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday. The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office identified the man killed during the shooting as John Evers Jr., 51, of Savannah.
The incident occurred on the 900 block of Fleming Loop Road in eastern Liberty County. When officers arrived they found Evers lying in the driveway apparently dead from gunfire. Another man was transported to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah. The injured man, later found to be the homeowner, Lee Edwards, suffered a wound to the left hand.
According to a Liberty County Sheriff’s Office incident report, deputies were advised by dispatch on route to the crime scene that three individuals had fled the scene on foot into a wooded area.
Once officers arrived on scene, a responding deputy went to check the pulse of Evers who was lying in the driveway. He had to roll Evers over in order to get a check on his pulse, according to the report. The deputy then noticed a small handgun on the ground. The officer kicked the handgun off to the side and continued to check Evers for a carotid pulse but was unable to locate one. The deputy secured the handgun in his patrol vehicle, according to the LCSO.
When additional deputies arrived on scene, officers cleared the residence for other individuals. A responding deputy noticed blood in one bedroom and multiple marks on the wall from suspected gunshots.
As deputies cordoned off the area with crime scene tap, a man and woman walked over from a neighbor’s house, and identified themselves as the homeowners and alleged victims, Lindsey and Lee Edwards, according to the incident report. LIndsay Edwards told officers her husband, Lee, had been shot in the hand. The couple told officers that they were in the bedroom when two men exited from a white truck, walked to the home and forced their way inside. Lee Edwards fired multiple shots toward the two men when a third man walked up to the front door.
Lindsay Edwards, according to the LCSO report, told deputies she was wanted in McIntosh County. Dispatch confirmed the warrant and advised that McIntosh law enforcement wanted a hold placed on her. She was transported to the Liberty County Jail where she was booked without incident.
The shooting remains under investigation.
