Live Oak Public Libraries and the Regional Board of Library Trustees announced Tuesday that Tom Sloan has been named library executive director.

Sloan began his position on Aug. 1, and he brings with him more than 30 years of library experience. He has been a library director for systems in Florida, Illinois and most recently New York. He has served as the State Librarian of Delaware as well as a Library Speaker/Specialist for the Office of International Information Programs for the United States Department of State.

“It is an honor to serve as the Library Executive Director and work with stakeholders and community partners to enrich the lives of people of all ages, support educational aspirations, and build more sustainable communities,” says Sloan.

A library advocate, he has played an active role on numerous committees and boards for organizations such as the American Library Association, the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services, the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies as well as state library associations in Delaware, Florida, Illinois and New York. Sloan has received several awards in recognition of his service and contributions to libraries and communities.

Board of Trustees Chair Charlotte Welch said, “The Board of Library Trustees is excited to have Tom Sloan as our new executive director. His past proficiency as a leader in successful library systems, his knowledge of how public libraries meet needs in the community, and his ability to recognize the importance of shaping our libraries for the future are the reasons the board selected Mr. Sloan. The board welcomes our new director and looks forward to working with him.”

His involvement in library systems extends to writing and speaking at national and international levels. Sloan has been published widely and he has given presentations on a variety of subjects related to libraries, technology, and information resources.

Sloan earned a Master of Science in library science from Florida State University and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Delaware. He has a Bachelor of Science in education from the University of Tennessee.
