A physical altercation involving four students occurred during a class transition period at Bradwell Institute on Wednesday. School resource officers responded immediately and intervened to stop the fight. During the response, pepper spray was deployed in order to safely restore order.
As a precaution, students and staff members in the immediate area were evaluated after experiencing minor irritation related to the spray. The school nurse and emergency medical personnel assessed those affected and provided appropriate care.
One deputy received minor injuries to his hands and one student was transported to Liberty Regional Medical Center by ambulance for a minor injury.
The situation was contained quickly, according to school system officials, and the campus was secured. Classes resumed shortly afterward, and the school day continued on its normal schedule.
An investigation into the incident is currently underway. Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with district policy and the Liberty County School System Code of Conduct.
“The safety and well-being of students and staff remain the district’s highest priority,” school system officials said in a release. “We appreciate the swift response of school personnel and local first responders in ensuring a safe learning environment.”
