Standoff ends without incident

Hinesville police officers managed to get a man with several guns to leave a house without incident Saturday.

Officers were called to a house near the intersection of Elm and Demere streets with the report of an intoxicated man in the street, threatening to shoot people.

One of the officers got the suspect on the phone and talked him into surrendering peacefully, HPD Lt. Richard Boucher said.

The suspect was tased and taken into custody.

Hinesville man faces charges in alleged sweepstakes scam

A federal grand jury in Connecticut has returned an indictment against a Hinesville man for running a sweepstakes scam. Marc H. Silverman, acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut, and Ketty Larco-Ward, Inspector in Charge of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Boston Division, announced the indictment Wednesday against Jimmy Smith, 30. Smith, a native of Jamaica, is living in Hinesville.
