SAVANNAH - State Sen. Eric Johnson (R-Savannah) Tuesday announced he will seek re-election to the Georgia Senate in District 1, which covers much Liberty County, all of Bryan and portions of Chatham.
He presently serves as the president pro tempore of the state Senate. If re-elected he it will be his eighth two-year term.
"Public service is an awesome responsibility shouldered by men and women who must answer to their neighbors," the senator said in a prepared statement.
"Throughout my political career, from party activist to U. S. Senate staff to the Georgia General Assembly, I have taken that responsibility seriously. I cherish our precious republic and the duty it imposes on each of us. Therefore, it is my intent to qualify for re-election to the Georgia State Senate. I have fought for a government that is more responsive to its citizens and more responsible with their tax dollars."
Johnson is an architect and works at North Point Industrial, a commercial development firm. He and his wife, Kathryn, have been married for 33 years and have two children. His family attends Savannah Christian Church.
Qualifying for all offices starts later this month. No one has announced they will oppose Johnson's bid.
