SAVANNAH — Sunday alcohol sales got off to a slow start in Savannah.

The Savannah Morning News reports (http://bit.ly/zPZoGD) that package store owners in Savannah and Chatham County reported slow business last week, when residents of the south Georgia community could buy alcohol on Sundays for the first time.

Voters in Savannah, unincorporated Chatham County and every municipality in the area except for Garden City approved Sunday sales in November. The new policy took effect on Jan. 1.

Tommy Chu owns Bull River Beverage Mart on Wilmington Island. He said "there really wasn't enough business to justify being open" last Sunday.

Coastal Spirits manager Shawn Randerwala said business wasn't much better at his Port Wentworth shop. He said it was "definitely nothing to write home about."
