Still big need for census takers in coastal Georgia
2020 Census Jobs

There are still plenty of open spots for census takers in coastal Georgia, according to a recruiter.

According to Peter Nichols, the partnership specialist in charge of recruiting for the 2020 Census, there are still openings for census takers in Liberty, Long, Bryan, Chatham, McIntosh and Tattnall counties.

“We still need about 30 in Liberty County, 63 for Long County, 45 Census Takers for Bryan County and 30 in McIntosh County,” Nichols said recently. “We also need about 150 census Takers for Tattnall County and 3,000 for Chatham County.”

Census takers will be hired to work in their communities and go door-to-door to collect responses from those who do not respond to the 2020 Census online, by phone or by mail.

These positions offer competitive pay, flexible hours, paid training and weekly paychecks. Pay rates vary from $13.50 to $30 per hour, depending on where the job is located.

The selection process for census taker positions begins in January.

“Working for the 2020 Census is the perfect opportunity for holiday seasonal workers, students, retirees and other freelance workers,” said Krystal Hart, 2020 census outreach coordinator for Liberty County. “While we do not control hiring on the local level, we want to make sure our residents have a chance to gain income and help shape our community’s future by working for the Census Bureau during the 2020 count.”

Applicants need to apply online at: https://2020census.gov/en/jobs

“That takes you to the application and the assessment questions,” Nichols explained. “You create a personal portal and your profile page. Background checks are required and that takes time which is why we are encouraging folks to apply early. “The minimum age for applicants is 18 and non-US Citizen that have green cards or permanent resident cards may apply.”

The U.S. Constitution mandates that a census of the population be conducted once every 10 years. Census data are used to determine congressional representation in the states and how billions of dollars in federal funds are distributed to states and local communities every year for critical public services and infrastructure, including health clinics, schools, roads and emergency services.
