The last two Mondays of this month will be taxing times for people who keep up with local government affairs.
On Nov. 19, there will be simultaneous public hearings on tax increases by the board of commissioners and the Liberty County Development Authority in the commissioners' boardroom of the county annex building. One hearing is at 10 a.m. and one is at 6 p.m.
That same day, the hospital authority will be receiving public comments on its plan to increase its tax by 127 percent. Sessions at the hospital are set for 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. in the classrooms.
The following Monday, Nov. 26, the commissioners and the LCDA will team up again at 6 p.m. in the Annex Building. The hospital has set its final tax hike hearing Nov. 26 at 10 a.m.
In contrast to the hospital authority's more than doubling its rate, the commissioners are levying an increase of less than 4.5 percent and the LCDA is asking for 8.8 percent more.
