Traffic changing downtown, on post

Traffic patterns in central Hinesville will change Wednesday because of construction on Fort Stewart's main gate and along Memorial Drive.

Fort Stewart announced in a news release it is expanding the canopy over inbound lanes so at any given time two of the three lanes will be closed from March 24 through June 24. To help ease congestion during that time Gate 2 on Main Street will be opened during certain times on weekdays.

The "pass lane" of Gate 1 will not be affected and inbound traffic will be able to use this lane to enter Fort Stewart.

Hours for Gate 2 for inbound and outbound traffic will be 5 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday-Friday, beginning Wednesday.

The Downtown Development Authority announced that starting at 8 a.m. Wednesday the east-bound lane of West Memorial Drive will reopen to local traffic and the west-bound lane will be closed to all traffic from Gause Street to the entrance of Magnolia Plantation.

The east-bound lane will be one way only, but contractors hope to keep access to all businesses and properties during construction.
