With food supplied by Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia and help provided by local organizations and businesses — and some city council members — Walthourville Mayor Sarah B. Hayes and the city held its annual food giveaway at the city hall parking lot August 23.

“It’s smooth. It runs like clockwork. People just drive through,” she said, noting she had done it so many times. “Just like in the Army, I set up stations.”

Hayes said some of the people in line got there as early as 8 a.m. There was enough food to feed 300, but Hayes said they could stretch it out to accommodate 380.

Volunteers loaded a variety of canned goods, fresh fruit and even milk and poultry into the backs of vehicles as they stopped. But cars moved quickly through the line, which stretched from the fire department on Busbee Road back to Highway 84.
