Wife in fatal ‘love triangle’ convicted
Kemia Hassel
Kemia Hassel

Kemia Hassel, a Fort Stewart soldier who was married to murder victim, Sgt. Tyrone Hassel III, and suspected of masterminding his murder, was convicted of killing her husband in a Berrien County, Michigan courtroom earlier this week, according to the Associated Press.

Hassel and her boyfriend, Jeremy Cuellar, 24, also a Fort Stewart soldier, were arrested in January and charged with shooting and killing Tyrone Hassel in the driveway of his family’s home on New Year’s Eve in Michigan.

Kemia Hassel is expected to be sentenced in late August, according to the AP. Cuellar, the AP reported, is being held on a $2.5 million bond and will be tried next month.

In a Courier interview following Cuellar’s extradition hearing in mid-January at the Liberty County Jail, Maj. David Edwards with the Liberty County Sheriffs Officer said Cuellar was arrested without incident at about 10 p.m. Jan. 11, at his home on Robin Hood Drive in Hinesville. Cuellar was held in the Liberty County Jail before being extradited to Michigan.

Tyrone Hassel’s father, Tyrone Hassel Jr., was also interviewed by the Courier. The victim’s father said Kemia Hassel never gave any indication there was trouble in the marriage with his son. He said his daughter-in-law appeared to have been grief stricken following the murder. Kemia Hassel did not attend her husband’s funeral. Tyrone Hassel Jr. said, when he was home in Michigan, he was asked to bring Kemia to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office on Jan. 11, where she was arrested and charged with the murder of his son.
