Is downtown sprouting life?

This weekend’s Oktoberfest in Hinesville emphasizes that Vicki Davis and her crew, as well as a cadre of volunteers, are doing a good job bringing life to downtown.
For summer there were the Friday concerts in the park. September had Blues and BBQ. Later this month there’s going to be a Halloween festival. December will see the annual tree lighting and Christmas parade.
The Hinesville Downtown Development Authority is working on getting people interested in the area again. In addtition, the rework of Washington Avenue into a two-lane boulevard and renamed Memorial Drive has added an attractive entrance to the government/business district.
It has needed it. For too long downtown has been known for the businesses it had lost and as a destination if you had to do something at the courthouse.
There was a lot of competition for area residents’ attention over the weekend, but the downtown festival held its own. And, if organizers can sustain the event, it will grow in the future. Reputation is important now. Get that and the people will come.
