letter to editor new

Dear Editor,

On the Saturday morning of July 27, 2024, a very diverse group assembled at the Keep Liberty Beautiful Office area with just one thought in mind: they were there to work and to help our community.

The group was composed of several members of the Morning Glory Garden Club, Keep Liberty Beautiful Advisory Board members, KLB Director Dr. Karen Bell, Girl Scouts from Troop 2 and their advisors, Mrs. Milly Wilson and Mrs Ena Wilson-Armstrong, and several parents and friends.

This was the second part of this project; the first gardens were so well received that the troop decided they wanted to make more, 50 more in fact.

The Liberty County Chamber of Commerce donated the five gallon plastic buckets for the gardens, Morning Glory Garden Club contributed toward purchase of the small plants, Garden Club member Cindie Rigdon delivered two loads of very rich dirt which she dug at Public Works and she also drilled drainage holes in the bottoms of the buckets.

Each garden bucket was to hold a vegetable plant and an herb. The beautiful small plants included cucumbers, okra and more and the herbs included rosemary and various forms of mint. All of these were selected as plants which would thrive in full sun or light shade when the sun became too intense.

The troop members set to work with a willing spirit and soon, with just a little coaching from adults, had all 50 buckets assembled.

This was truly a community effort and was carried out for the betterment of our area and for the gardening education of all who participated.
