Spiritual blessings come from Heaven
pastor Arlien Bradeen

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: Ephesians 1:3

When we hear the word blessing, many times we think only in the physical realm. Now I will not play the hypocrite and say earthly blessings are not needed and appreciated, but we would like to focus on what the Bible calls spiritual blessings.

There are many scriptures that deal with the subject of receiving blessings, but it is not a twisting of God’s arm that gets the blessings.  In fact, that is a misrepresentation of our loving heavenly Father. Many times, God is portrayed as being tight fisted with His blessings, and that He reluctantly disperses meager portions to a select few who have begged until their tongue turns blue.

But Jesus said, “Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?” Matthew 7:9-11

Then the Apostle Paul said, “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19

Listen to these words from the lips of our Savior; “Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.  But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:31-33

So, we see that blessing, or our needs being supplied, is a given when we have come into a right relationship with the Lord Jesus, and through Him we become a child of God.

Why did the Holy Spirit lead Paul to specifically say “spiritual blessings?”  I believe it is because He knew that man primarily focuses on the physical or the carnal.  But without the spiritual blessings, we would not be able to keep the carnal when they come our way.

How many times have we seen people obtain financial and material wealth and at the same time lose their family or sacrifice a good reputation all because they did not have the spiritual strength to handle it?

God our Father has blessed us with all spiritual blessing in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.  Let me quickly highlight some of the spiritual blessings mentioned.

Verse 4, We have been chosen in Christ.  Therefore, we can stop doubting if we are supposed to be saved.

Verse 5, God’s predetermined plan for our life is that we be adopted into His family. No more questioning His love for us.

Verse 6, we have been made accepted in the beloved.  What a spiritual blessing when we believe in Jesus Christ we are accepted by God.

The list goes on and on, but we will stop at verse 7, “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;”

No wonder the old saints could sing from their heart, “Take this whole world but give me Jesus.”
