The fourth annual Shawnee McGowan Memorial Junior Rodeo as last weekend at the NC Ranch in Long County.

According to Alice McGowan, Shawnee’s mother, this year the total raised was about $7,000.

"It just seems to get bigger every year," she said. "And this is the most that we ever raised.

"I’m thankful for all of the sponsors and everyone who helped. You know because of them every year we have a great rodeo, and we’re always able to give a toy to all the kids."

McGowan also praised NC Ranch owners Nino and Michelle Ciccone and the family of the late Sydney Stevenson for continuing their sponsorship.

McGowan said the groups that will be getting funds from the rodeo include the Long County High School football and softball teams, the Walker Middle School softball team, Smiley Elementary School and the new agriculture department at the high school.

She said planning for next year has already begun.

"Next year, Shawnee would have graduated, so what we’re doing is all the money that is raised will go to the senior class," McGowan said.

The rodeo’s namesake was killed in a vehicle accident in April 2006.
