Baker, Blevins take top honors in South subregion

Junior point guard Janiyah Blevins was named Region 1-AAAAA South player of the year.

The Bradwell Institute Lady Tigers took the top two honors in voting by Region 1-AAAAA South basketball coaches.

Coach Faye Baker was named coach of the year after leading her team to the region championship and the Elite Eight of the Class 5A playoffs and junior guard Janiyah Blevins was named the player of the year.

Blevins, a junior, averaged 7.9 points, 3.8 assists and 3.5 steals per game.

Senior Ja’Nya Bush and sophomore Destini McLemore were named to the first team. Bush finished with 11 points per game to go along with 5.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.6 points per game. McLemore averaged 12.8 points and 7.4 rebounds per game and also averaged 3.2 steals per game.

Senior Jamia Ousley and junior Mikayla Oliveira were named to the second team. Ousley averaged 9.7 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. She also averaged 2.9 steals per contest. Oliveira averaged 9 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.

Named to the honorable mention list were senior Kaydence Kern, junior Heather Garrett and sophomore Saniya Garner.

Brunswick’s Martin Davis was named offensive player of the year, and Glynn Academy’s Alyssa Martin was named defensive player of the year. Kyla Shuman of South Effingham was named freshman of the year.
