The Bradwell Institute softball team had a 1-4 record at last weekend’s Warriors’ Blast Tournament in Glennville.
The upside of the tournament for the Lady Tigers was beating Liberty County, 8-7, in the teams’ second matchup of the season.
Bradwell suffered an 8-0 loss against Toombs County in Friday’s first game of the tournament. Lady Tiger Miracle Fata was 1 for 3 at the plate. Briana Tootle and Mackenzie Stewart each were 1 for 2 for the Lady Tigers.
On the mound, Stewart walked seven and struck out four. Six of Toombs’ runs were earned. Defensively, Melissa Gregory had four putouts.
In game two, the Lady Tigers lost, 9-1, to Tattnall County. BI’s Kaylenn Pixley was 1 for 2, and Melissa Gregory drove in the team’s lone run.
Pixley pitched three innings, walking two, striking out one and giving up six hits. Stewart pitched
1 innings with two walks, two strikeouts and two hits. Fata had five putouts, while Tamia Johnson and Gregory each had three putouts.
On Saturday morning, the Lady Tigers avenged last Thursday’s 19-2 loss to Liberty by downing the Lady Panthers.
Shania Eldridge was 2 for 3, and Melissa Gregory was 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Fata was 1 for 2, Stewart was 1 for 4 with one RBI, Tootle was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and Tamia Johnson had one RBI.
Lady Tiger coach Sharyl Eastlake said Liberty pitchers Kathryn Carter and Kaleigh Fisher sat out, and her players made solid hits against the Lady Panthers’ Rachel Smith.
Gregory led the defense again with eight putouts, and Fata had four. BI pitcher Madison Winn had six strikeouts, walked four batters and gave up 14 hits.
The win, however, was followed up by a 10-3 loss to Emanuel County Institute. ECI scored two runs in the first inning off a home run and a single. ECI added three more runs in the third inning.
In the fifth inning, ECI added five more runs, highlighted by a two-run homer.
Eldridge was 2 for 2 with an RBI, while Pixley batted 2 for 3. Stewart was 2 for 3, Gregory had one RBI, Winn was 1 for 1 and Fata and Johnson each were 1 for 2.
On the hill, Stewart walked one, struck out four and gave up the two homers.
“Our defense was much stronger that it was Friday evening,” Eastlake said. “Miracle Fata’s defense and Shania Eldridge’s offense led the team.”
Bradwell ended the tournament with an 11-6 loss to Treutlen.
Fata led the Lady Tigers at bat going 2 for 3 with two RBIs, Tootle was 1-of-3 with two RBIs, Eldridge was 1 for 3 with one RBI, and Chesnee Giraldo had one RBI.
The Lady Tigers are currently 1-5 overall.
Bradwell plays Thursday at Effingham County and travels this weekend to Statesboro for the Battle in the ’Boro Tournament. The Lady Tigers are scheduled to play Treutlen at 4 p.m. Friday and East Laurens at 6 p.m.
On Saturday, they play Ware County at 9 a.m.
“We will be working on bat-speed drills,” Eastlake said, referencing preparation for the upcoming games.
