The Long County High School band recently continued its dominance, bringing home 19 awards from the Coffee County Invitation Band Competition on Sept. 27 in Douglas.

Awards included first place/superior trophies in drum major, dance line, color guard, drum line, majorettes, band and in their class competitions. Superior awards were earned in band, dance line, drum line, majorettes and sweepstakes. Excellent rating awards came in the color-guard and drum-major divisions.

Director Terry Kenny said that with these awards, the band remains undefeated in four years of competition. Last year, the band was one of 19 bands nationally to be selected to play on New Year’s Day during the halftime show at the Sugar Bowl. While in New Orleans, the band competed in the Allstate Sugar Bowl competition and brought home the top prize in the field-show competition.

This year, the band has been selected to perform in the McDonald’s Chicago Thanksgiving Parade on Nov. 27. That parade is the second-largest parade of its kind behind only the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade in New York.

Kenny said that the band is raising funds to make the trip to Chicago, but that donations are needed and encouraged. For more information, call Kenny at 545-2135 or 545-2041.
