The Long County Blue Tide cross country team hosted the region championship meet on Thursday, Oct 26. It was a successful day for the teams as the boys won their second straight region championship and the girls finished second.
The girls’ team, made up of Macey Higgason, Tamiya Copeland, Kaley Hunter, Kayleigh Whitesell, Abigail Nadeau, Isabella Lucas, and Kaylin Hatfield, finished with 62 points.
Higgason, a sophomore, finished second overall and qualified for the state meet as an individual.
The boys’ team, made up of Shawn Young, Trent Rutherford, Trevor Kuchar, Dillian Morse, Parker Hall, Adam Fuentes, and Connor Brown, finished with 35 points and beat out Savannah Christian by four to win the region championship.
Young, a junior, finished with a time of 17:36 and won the individual region championship as well. Kuchar and Rutherford finished third and sixth individually. All three qualified for the state meet as individuals.
Both the boys and girls team will advance to the state championship meet. This is the second year in a row that both teams qualified for the state meet and the fourth year in a row that an individual for either the boys or girls finished on the podium.
The teams will compete in the state meet in Carrollton on Saturday, Nov. 4.
