The Long County High School girls basketball team had a tough weekend, losing two games.
Friday, the Lady Blue Tide traveled to the coast to take on 3-AAAA Brunswick High in a non-region game, and unfortunately the Pirates mastered the waters and won easily, 47-30.
Being led by Jessica Roberts and Zandra Green, Brunswick dominated the Lady Tide over the first two periods, and sent the local girls in at the half down 10-21.
However, in the third quarter Shareka Turner and Brittany Mills combined for 16 points, narrowing the Long County deficit.
In the fourth period, the Lady Pirates buckled down on defense, holding the Blue girls to 4 points, picking up the win.
In the game, Brianne Page and India Gamble each had 4 points, while Turner and Mills each finished the night with 8 points.
On Saturday, the Blue Tide ladies were back on the court, this time in the "friendly waters" of Ludowici, taking on another team of pirates, Appling County.
Coming into the game the Lady Pirates knew they had to win to keep their post-season hopes alive. The Lady Blue Tide came in mathematically alive, but having to win. And the girls still had to have a whole lot of others things go their way to extend their season.
Well, the Pirates sunk the Lady Tides' ship, winning the game 47 to 30. With the win, Appling's record went to 6-7 in the 2-AA Region. Jeff Davis County sits at 6-6. Both teams are fighting for the fourth spot in the playoffs, with one week left in the season.
In the game Saturday, Long County was led in scoring by India Gamble who put up 17 points, while Caela LaRochester added 6.
The loss dropped the Blue's overall record to 6-14, and their region record to 4-9.
The ladies played their final region game last night against the Brantley County Herons in Nahunta, but results for were not available in time for this story.
The Lady Blue's final game of the year will be Friday at home in a rematch with the team they played on Friday, the Brunswick Pirates. Tip off is at 6:30 p.m.
