Long County knew it needed to pull off an upset Thursday over Jeff Davis (18-6) if the Blue Tide were to have any chance at making the playoffs.
According to MaxPreps.com, the Yellow Jackets were the No. 7 ranked AA team in the state and, with the game being in Hazlehurst, the Blue Tide had a difficult task.
But Long County went into the game undaunted and, after seven innings, it looked like the Tide might pull off the miracle, as the game was tied 6-6.
But as good teams usually do, Jeff Davis scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning, taking the game 7-6 and ending Long County’s playoff hopes.
With the Blue Tide (14-11) falling, Region 2-AA ‘s playoff representatives will be Benedictine Military School, who finished 14-0 in the region; Jeff Davis, who as of Friday was 11-2; Bryan County, who was 8-5; and Bacon County, who finished 8-6. Jeff Davis and Bryan County played each other Saturday in each school’s final region game of the year.
Rounding out the standings in the region were Long County (7-7), Vidalia (5-9), McIntosh County (2-12) and Groves (0-14).
The Blue Tide wrapped up their season Saturday at home against Claxton (8-11). See Wednesday’s Courier for the results.
