The Long County boys basketball team picked up its second straight win Tuesday, beating Region 2-AA foe Jeff Davis County 61-49 in Hazelhurst.

The win improves the Blue Tide to 3-5 overall and brings their region mark to 2-1.

In the process, the team improved its free throw shooting. The Blue Tide sank 16 of 19, pleasing coach Deshon Brock.

"I was impressed with how well we shot the ball from the free throw line," Brock said. "I also was impressed with how well we kept our composure when things were not going well."

Jarquez Payne led all scorers with 14 points. Jamal Posey had 11 points and four steals, and both earned praise from their coach.

"Posey played his best all-around game so far this season … I thought both young men played well," the coach said.

Jamal Anderson and Chris LaRochester had 11 points each for Long County, which is now in fourth place in 2-AA behind unbeaten Tattnall County, Vidalia and one-loss Brantley County.

The Blue Tide are at home tonight against Toombs County High School in their first meeting. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m.
