Though the temperatures have been hovering around 100 recently, the heat hasn’t stopped the Long County football team from getting in summer workouts. Players began weight-training before the end of the last school year, meeting after classes.
After a short break at the beginning of the summer, they were back in the weight room for two-hour sessions on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursday. The team got another break the first week of July to celebrate Independence Day.
When practices restarted July 11, there was more weightlifting and additional conditioning for three-hour sessions three days a week. Coaches say they give several breaks and ensure that the players stay hydrated.
On Aug. 12, the Blue Tide will see their first action of the year, scrimmaging the Claxton Tigers in Ludowici. Two weeks later, Long County opens the regular season against Islands in Savannah on Aug. 26.
