A 9-0 run in the third quarter sparked the Bradwell Institute Tigers on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers rallied from a halftime deficit to pull away from in-county rival Liberty County for a 63-52 win at the LCHS gym.
There were five lead changes and three ties in a back-and-forth first half. Liberty grabbed its biggest lead of the game at 20-14 on Elijah Brown’s bucket midway through the second quarter, prompting a timeout from the Tigers.
Zi’on Thomas followed his own missed putback to put the Tigers back in front 21-20, but Keanu Maynard buried his second 3-pointer of the quarter to give the Panthers a 25-23 lead. Brown, who had a game-high 24 points, got a three-point play and drilled a 3 in the final seconds for a 31-26 Liberty advantage at halftime.
But Eli Hale’s drive capped a 9-0 burst in the first two minutes of the second half that pushed Bradwell back in front. Maynard’s drive to the basket staked the Panthers to a 37-35 lead, but Fortune Hicks and Thomas answered for the Tigers, giving them a 39-37 they did not relinquish.
Thomas’ 3 to close the third widened the Tigers lead to 45-38 and put the wraps on a 10-1 spurt to close the quarter.
Aaron Brown’s drive down the lane and another Elijah Brown layup got the Panthers within 48-44 but Keon Grant extended the lead again with a 3 and then a layup of Chris Perry’s long outlet pass.
Thomas led the Tigers with 17 points, while Grant and Perry each finished with 10 points. Perry had a double-double with 10 rebounds and also handed out five assists. Hale added eight rebounds to his nine points and Thomas collected eight boards.
Jaylin Sweat, named the Davion Mitchell player of the game, had nine points, four rebounds, three assists and three blocks.
Maynard finished with 20 points for the Panthers, and Aaron Brown had six points.
