Bradwell’s young line held strong and made key blocks in Friday night’s region opener against Groves High School, allowing Tiger fullback Sheldon Barnes to propel the squad to a 25-6 win in Garden City.

The Tigers kept the Rebels from earning their first victory of the season; they are 0-4. The Tigers are 1-0 in Region 3-AAAAA and 3-1 overall.

Helping Barnes rack up the points was quarterback Wilson Brown and a tough Tiger defense that held the Rebels to minus yards in the second half.

The Rebels were first on the scoreboard after a high snap by the Tigers. The ball flew over kicker David Miller’s head, giving the Rebels the ball on the Tigers’ 32-yard line. The Rebels mounted a short drive for the touchdown, but missed the PAT.

Barnes ran for 186 yards and a touchdown, and Brown carried the ball 127 yards and scored twice. The Tigers controlled the running game and the clock throughout the second half for the win.

Tiger coach Jim Walsh said he was going to keep the game plan simple to let his younger players mature.

After their victory Friday night, Walsh said despite still making a few mental mistakes, the victory was a big step forward for his team.
