The Brantley County Herons cooled off the Liberty County baseball team’s hot start Saturday.
The Herons banged out 10 hits and scored nine runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 12-3 win over the Panthers.
Liberty came into the game 4-0. Shedrick Pass fanned seven over four innings while Mikey Miller, Caden Chancey and Jaden Herrington each drove in two runs in a 12-0 win over cross-town rival Bradwell Institute. The Panthers drew seven walks and had four batters hit by a pitch in the season opener. Glemon English officially was 0-for-0 at the plate but scored three runs, and Herrington went 2-for-2 with a double.
The Panthers downed Bulloch Academy 9-7 as Herrington homered and drove in two runs and Miller added a double and two RBIs. The Panthers pounded McIntosh County Academy 12-1, with Herrington striking out nine and allowing one run over five innings on the mound and driving in three runs at the plate. He went 1-for-4 with a double. Pass was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and English added a double.
Liberty concluded its opening four-game winning streak with a 7-4 triumph over Claxton. Hunter Lites fanned seven over five innings, Pass went 2-for-4 and English tripled and scored three runs.
The Panthers host Portal on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and visit Portal on Friday at 6 p.m. They travel to MCA on Monday and to Bulloch Academy on Tuesday.
