The grandson of Midway natives Edward and Sarah Stevens has won the 2016 USA Taekwondo Nationals Championships.

Landen Elijah Stevens is the 2016 National Taekwondo champion in the Youth Sparring Division which is the 10-11 age group. The event took place in Richmond, Virginia, July 4-10.

Sarah Stevens said the event included athletes from all over the country.

Stevens fought in five matches, winning each one (12-2; 3-1; 8-0; 3-1; 4-0). Each match consisted of three one-minute rounds. There were 22 boys in this division.

Stevens is coached by Alvaro Mendez of Styles United Transformative Martial Arts in Connecticut where Stevens lives with his parents, Everett and Nikia, and younger brother, Levi.

The 10-year-old’s grandparents live in Savannah but grew up in Midway and graduated from Liberty County High School.

He is a rising sixth grader student and participates in track.
