The Coffee Trojans outlasted the Liberty County Panthers 38-23 in the finals of the 30th annual Donell Woods Memorial Tournament.
Coffee also won the girls division, beating Camden County 32-22 in the finals.
The tournament, which features ninth-grade and junior varsity teams, began in 1991 as a way to pay tribute to Donell Woods, a coach and administrator at the segregated Liberty County High School. When the schools integrated, Woods came to Bradwell Institute to be an assistant football coach and head boys basketball coach. He succumbed to cancer in 1980.
The Coffee girls, after opening with a 35-20 win over Beach, beat Bradwell 33-18 to advance to the finals. Liberty County lost its opener in the girls bracket to Camden County before Bradwell beat Liberty 27-18.
Coffee’s JV beat Wayne County and then beat Bradwell’s JV to reach the boys finals. Liberty’s JV topped Bradwell’s ninth-grade team, which opened with a 45-23 romp over Coffee’s ninth-graders.
Games were held at the Bradwell and Snelson-Golden Middle School gyms.
