The Liberty County High School Panthers have much to cheer about after repeating history with a solid win over the Brantley County Herons Friday night.
Last year the Panthers shut out the Herons, 28-0. This year, the Herons came to battle. but the Panthers proved to be stronger and came out with a 33-13 victory.
Leading the Panther offense was senior quarterback Henry Barrett and the solid running game of Bryon Calahan, who had seven carries for 18-yards, Roderick Jones’ 18 carries for 116-yards and Brandon Roberts’ 10 carries for 87-yards.
The offense collectively had 42 carries for 244-yards and three touchdowns.
Head coach Kirk Warner said he felt his offense started a little sluggish but was ignited by the defense once they scored the first touchdown of the game.
Defensive coordinator Thomas Desbiens said his defense came out strong and played with determination. The Panther defense held the Herons to negative two yards in the second half.
Dimitri Lane, DeAngelo Quarterman and Delvin Smith each had a sack for the evening. Lane led with six tackles. Brandon Roberts and Reggie Bodie each had five, Kendrick Jones had four and Brandon Alvin, Tier Bennett and DeAngelo Quarterman each had three.
As well as the defense played, Desbiens said he wanted to continue working on becoming mentally stronger and causing more turnovers.
“We are getting players around the ball but we are not bringing the big hits that are going to cause turnovers,” he said.
Barrett said he was looking forward to playing Calvary Day this Friday. It was the Calvary Day defense that caused his season ending elbow injury last year.
“It was hard to sit on the sideline, especially when we went to the playoffs,” Barrett said. “It’s good to be back and I can’t wait to go against them.”
The panthers will host Calvary Day at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Olvey Field. Ticket prices have changed and may be purchased in advance from the school for $5. Tickets cost $7 at the gate the day of the night.
Friday’s game will be broadcast live on WOAH 106.3 FM.
